Welcome back to another episode of our Budget Bites series: this week we’re recreating salt & vinegar crunchy fava beans. They usually come in tiny 25g servings, and for something so small, they pack a big price tag of $1 per 25g bag.
We did the maths, and making them at home with just 3 simple ingredients costs only 31 cents for the same 25g serve. That’s over 3× cheaper, with no added flavours, no unnecessary ingredients (store-bought has 12!), and less packaging. A full homemade batch comes to $1.50 for 120g, meaning you get far more snack for your money, and it’s much healthier for kids as you can control the salt and oils used.
Chickpeas are the classic here because they roast up the crunchiest, but butter beans and cannellini beans work beautifully too if you prefer a softer bite or want to change things up.
They’re outrageously simple: no fancy steps, no preservatives, just real food that gets properly crispy in the air fryer or oven.

Crunchy Salt & Vinegar Roasted Chickpeas
Ingredients
- 1 x 400g can of chickpeas (drained, rinsed and patted dry)
- 3 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- Pinch sea salt (optional)
Instructions
- Drain, rinse, and pat the chickpeas completely dry, this is the key to getting them crunchy.
- Add to your airfryer basket along with the rest of the ingredients and toss to coat. Then cook for 25-30 minutes at 180c/350f or until golden and crispy (shake every 10 minutes).
- If you're using the oven: coat the chickpeas with the other ingredients, then spread on a lined tray and bake at 180c/350f for 45–50 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes, until crunchy and golden.
- Let them cool fully so they crisp up even more.
Storage
Store these in an airtight container at room temp for up to 1 week.Nutrition - Per Serving
