Welcome to Budget Bites, starting with the Easiest and Cheapest Seaweed Snacks. This new series is all about recreating kids’ snacks using healthier ingredients and for a much lower price than store-bought versions.
We are starting with one of the most expensive toddler snacks out there. Seaweed snacks. Those tiny packets cost a lot for only a few grams. We worked out the price per gram and found that the store-bought version is more than 8 times the cost of making them yourself at home.
Luckily, homemade seaweed snacks are so quick and easy. They take only 10 minutes, use very simple ingredients, and you can choose the oil and salt level so you can make them more suitable for babies 12+ months. They come out perfectly crunchy, naturally rich in minerals such as iodine, and they are a great snack for BLW babies, toddlers and lunchboxes (or for mini sushi squares)!

Seaweed Snacks
Ingredients
- 4 nori sheets
- 2 tsp olive oil (or sesame oil)
- Pinch sea salt (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 160c/320f (fan).
- Cut each nori sheet in half. Stack the halves and slice into three even rectangles. You will have 24 pieces.
- Place onto a lined baking tray. Using a pastry brush, lightly brush the top side of each piece with oil.
- Sprinkle with sea salt and sesame seeds if using.
- Bake for 7 to 9 minutes, keeping a close eye near the end (to stop them burning, you don't want any golden colour as they will taste bitter).
- Remove straight away and let them cool on the tray until crisp.
Storage
Store in an airtight container - they will stay crisp for 1 to 2 weeks. If they start to soften or feel stale, re-crisp them in the oven for 2 to 3 minutes and let them cool again before serving. Pop the desiccant packet that comes inside the nori packaging into your container to help keep them freshNutrition - Per Serving
